There was standing room only at the presentation of \u201cGaribaldi sul Fiume Tyne\u201d<\/em> by Patricia Frazer Brison, published by Davide Ghaleb Editore, with texts in Italian and English.<\/p>\n

The Centro Ricreativo Santa Lucia Filippini, Valentano provided warm hospitality for an enthusiastic public on \u00a023rd<\/sup> August 2014. The audience included\u00a0 prominent figures representing \u00a0educational, artistic and cultural areas of the Valentano community and towns nearby.<\/p>\n

They had gathered to hear the author talk about the inspiration for the book and her research into Garibaldi\u2019s stay at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1854 and \u00a0the city\u2019s strong support during \u00a0Italy\u2019s struggles for independence.<\/p>\n

Alan Brison explained the history of the River Tyne and surrounding area and his illustrations which complement the text. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Readings were given by Vera Risi whose lively and sensitive rendering of the extracts highlighted episodes in the book.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Professor Bonafede Mancini\u2019s contribution to the evening programme was a succinct and clear description of events in Valentano and the Tuscia-Viterbese area before, during and after the Garibaldi visit to Newcastle. His explanation of the national and European implications of Italian struggles for unification placed the Risorgimento in an international context.<\/p>\n

The families involved in Valentano\u2019s twinning with Haltwhistle which is near Newcastle, \u00a0and Saint M\u00e9en Le Grand, \u00a0in Brittany, France, \u00a0were particularly interested in hearing of\u00a0 the links between Italy and north-east\u00a0 England.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the end of the presentation there was animated conversation and enjoyment of\u00a0 the refreshments provided by the Centro Ricreativo.<\/p>\n
