Paolo Ruffini was born in Valentano on settembre 22nd, 1765. Later, Ruffini\u00a0practiced as a professor of mathematics (University of Modena<\/a>) in 1787 when only 22. He obtained<\/span> the office of<\/span> rector of the university<\/span><\/span> in 1814.<\/p>\n Ruffini died in 1822 in Modena. He is remembered for being<\/span> the first to<\/span> carry out studies<\/span> and<\/span> demonstrations<\/span> on<\/span> group theory<\/span> and the impossibility of<\/span> solving<\/span> the<\/span> quintic equation<\/span> by<\/span> radicals<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In 1996 the Municipality and Gruppo Archeologico Verentum<\/a> have placed a commemorative plaque on the <\/span><\/span>facade<\/span> of the mathematician’s birthplace<\/span><\/span>. Archival research<\/span> of prof.<\/span> Bonafede<\/span> Mancini<\/span> and<\/span> Romualdo<\/span> Luzi<\/span>,<\/span> have allowed us to<\/span> locate<\/span> the home of<\/span> Ruffini<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n Birth Certificate<\/span><\/span> from the registry office<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Italian language transcription of the birth certificate:<\/span> The “Ruffini\u2013Horner’s method<\/strong><\/a>” explained by an expert, with practical examples<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Paolo Ruffini date of birth and death <\/strong><\/p>\n The birth of<\/span> Ruffini<\/span> took place<\/span> on September 22nd, 1765<\/span> but the<\/span> first biography<\/span> of the mathematician<\/span> places it<\/span> instead<\/span> to the following day, 23<\/span>, the day of<\/span> baptism.<\/span> One can understand<\/span> the error<\/span> because of the division of the day<\/span>, at that time<\/span> using the Catholic Church conventions,<\/span> and then<\/span> according to the calculations<\/span> of the parish priests<\/span>,<\/span> was<\/span> made according to<\/span> the canonical hours<\/span> for<\/span> 12 hours<\/span> having the <\/span>night<\/span> beginning with the<\/span> 7 pm<\/span>,<\/span> that was the first<\/span> hour of the night<\/span> ,<\/span> and so on<\/span>,<\/span> until<\/span> the twelfth<\/span> hour<\/span> 6 o’clock<\/span> the following morning.<\/span> The pastor,<\/span> in the act<\/span> of baptism<\/span> is extremely accurate<\/span> and writes<\/span> that the child was<\/span> born<\/span> during the previous night<\/span> at hour <\/span>“fifth<\/span>“, so around <\/span>11 pm of day 22nd.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In many other books and encyclopedia articles is controversial even on the day of death, which some mistakenly set to May 9th (as happened in the indication of the commemorative plaque in Valentano), rather than the correct date of the following day 10 (as also appears in the epigraph placed in the hall of Modena where the Ruffini died). There are several factors to understand how the error may have occurred. Gustavo Barbensi, in the Ruffini biography of the 1956 wrote these words: “… On May 8 [1822] was a remarkable recovery, true prelude to death, because on day 9, which developed most ardent fever, since the last goodbye the desolate relatives and friends, went into agony, to expire at the dawn of the next day at the age of only 56 years.” Also in this case a hasty reading of the passage has led many to conclude that the date of death was on the 9th, while he passed away at the dawn of the following day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" This is the birthplace of the greatest mathematician Click on the image to enlarge it Paolo Ruffini was born in Valentano on settembre 22nd, 1765. Nell’anno del Signore 1765, il giorno 23 di settembre io Francesco Licca, Arciprete e Parroco di questa Chiesa Collegiata di San Giovanni Apostolo ed Evangelista di Valentano, ho battezzato un neonato di sesso maschile, nato la notte precedente alle ore cinque, dall’eccellentissimo Signor Basilio Rufini, Dottore Fisico di Regio di Modena [Reggio Emilia] e da Donna Maria Ippoliti di Poggio Mirteto, legittimi coniugi, abitanti in Valentano, al quale fu imposto il nome: Paolo Giovanni Pacifico Giacinto Bonaventura.
