On January 17, day of beginning of the Carnival, the people of Valentano celebrate S. Antonio Abbot near the Church of S. Croce where the image of the Saint is painted on a great cloth devoted to the Madonna of the Seven Pains. To the dawn the deputies of the party, near the Church, whose portal is decorated with a festoon of green (laurel, boxwood) on which are suspended of the mandarins, start a great bonfire ('l foco de Sant'Antogno). The benediction of the animals happens during the Mass of the morning during which the pagnottina de Sant'Antogno (a small round loaf) is blessed and then also distributed to those presents. At the end, pork roasted sausages are homaged to those present in great quantity. Unfortunately, it has disappeared from the party the Run of the gallinaccio with donkeys. Since it was necessary to tear off the neck to the gallinaccio (a turkey) suspended to a rope, the tradition has been interrupted for respecting the rules of the animals protection. Mijacce and struffole (great pancakes with fat of pig and crackers) constitute the traditional sweets of the carnival. It is tradition to consume, in this day,
dry beans cooked in damp and seasoned with olive oil. |
